False friends

Having looked into the similarities between French and English and the historical reasons for this, we explored how many French words we could think of that are used in English e.g. rendez-vous, crème de la crème, blasé, petite, cul-de-sac….

But there's also some false friends that are spelt the same in both languages but do not have the same meanings.

These are the 10 English words that were set as a challenge for the week to find out their meanings in French – without using dictionaries or google etc.

car

casserole

cave

chair

crane

four

grave

or

pain

dent

Any more that should be added to this list?
